Which BS 5839-1 category does my Newport premises need?
The category follows the fire risk assessment, not a price list. Category M is manual call points only, suitable for simple premises where occupants can be relied upon to raise the alarm. L5 covers a specific identified risk, L4 adds detection to escape routes, L3 protects rooms opening onto escape routes, L2 adds high-risk areas and L1 covers the whole building. Mixed-use buildings with flats above shops in NP20 usually land at L2 or L1 because of the sleeping risk above.
How do you install in an occupied city-centre building?
We phase the work floor by floor and keep the existing system live until the new panel is ready to take over. Cabling is run above suspended ceilings or in containment where it exists, first fix happens before opening or on quieter trading days, and the changeover is scheduled for a specific agreed window. Shared landlord and tenant buildings need coordination as much as engineering, so we deal directly with the managing agent and the tenants rather than passing messages through you.
What is the difference between conventional and addressable?
A conventional panel reports a zone, so you know roughly where the activation is. An addressable panel reports the individual device, so you know the exact head. For a small single-unit shop a conventional panel is proportionate. For anything with multiple floors, several tenancies or interfaces to vents, door holders and lifts, addressable is worth the difference: fault finding is faster, unwanted activations are traceable to a device, and the system can be extended without re-wiring loops.
Who signs the system off?
BS 5839-1 splits responsibility across design, installation, commissioning and acceptance. We provide the first three as certificates and hand you the acceptance certificate to sign once you are satisfied. That documentation, together with the zone chart, as-fitted drawings and logbook, is what your insurer and the fire authority will expect to see under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
